Nestled in the trees atop the windy Presidio Heights, Karl the Store exudes a refreshing sense of style rooted in mid-century modern design. Opened in August of 2017, Karl offers an eclectic mix of contemporary and vintage furniture, home goods, jewelry, clothing, art, and much more. Referred to as an “airy oasis” by one customer, you are warmly welcomed in by the friendly shop-owner, Dennis Green, eager to share the history and story behind each hand-picked piece.
A lifelong student of great design, Dennis wants to share his point of view through Karl by “showcasing mid-century modern and how it can work with contemporary design”. In a retail world dominated by online shopping, his goals are to present a curated collection of product in an inviting environment where customers can “shop, share stories, and have a memorable in-person experience”.
Upon entering the store, you are filled with a sense of nostalgia evoked through the mid-century modern Danish furniture, vintage french magazine prints, repurposed Levi’s jeans, and model airplane kits, just like the ones you owned as a kid. Not only are the walls lined with a variety of vintage goods, but with contemporary products such as handmade ceramics, leather goods, jewelry, handwoven African baskets, domino sets, soaps, candles, and so on. There is certainly something special for every person who walks in.
Stop by and marvel at the stunning cherry-picked pieces that decorate the space, or just take a seat in a 1940s French club chair and strike up a conversation with the amiable shop owner.
